I am a small car enthusiast who enjoys maximizing the utility and communications capabilities of my car instead of having separate vehicles for each need. With my current car, a 2017 VW GTI, my efforts transformed a "hot hatch" into a commuter, travel car, ham radio station, audio sound stage, workhorse, and weekend joy-rider. My videos feature my endeavors toward achieving, expanding, or maintaining this goal. You, too, can "do more with less." Feel free to visit my other sites by using the links in my banner, including my Amazon storefront where I feature some of the equipment that's in my car.
Feel free to contact me by visiting stealthgti.com/about-me/ or ke4wmf.com/about-me/, depending on your interest.

New Tower, But Compact Setup

I recently shared my latest tower setup. But there's more... or would it be less? My "compact setup" has just two bands, 6m and 2m, and is more convenient for travel. Not stated in the video: The mast is 18 inches shorter and a few pounds lighter than my Yagi setup. It also uses the same rear door cable pass-thru port. My Mobile Amateur Radio (Ham) Setup in 2023
Great video! Thank you. 73 PA5BAS
Would this also work if I’m ON the grid too?
Great information; very helpful! Definitely worth the slightly longer video format.
I am impressed and learned a lot by your meticulous planning of a long trip.
*…..BIG DOWNER: BLOCKS XM RADIO Antenna Signal….correct??????!!!!*
Should twist the chains to reduce the slack instead
most car manuals advise not to polish the instrument cluster because it removes anti glare which will cause it to be highly reflective and disturbing when driving. What about that? I mean if the scracthes are very minor and only visible under certain light, why bother causeing such a big modification to the glass?
Glad you know the what a diplexer is, a lot of hams don't no the difference! (they would call it a duplexer)
Geeked out to the max!!
I think the spec are 8NM and 45 degrees, so that's 1/8 turn. About to do my pan shortly, just shopping for the gasket now. thanks for the video.
Thanks for the info! I think I was doing that I felt like the thread was at the edge of stripping. I don't recall what spec I use, but I do recheck them from time to time. Thanks for visiting!
Do you know if this upgrade works for the mk6.5 gli sel with the fender mib2 6.5?
No idea. Contact EuroZone Tuning and ask him. Last I recalled, he's very responsive to e-mail messages. Thanks for visiting!
Just put anti seize on the hub centric😊, Not the hub face, your rims will come off easily every time even in the rust belt.
Thanks for the info!
And change the cap. And the termostat
Thanks!
Check the pipes. Is one pipe in front down
My coolant leak eventually appeared. I had my thermostat, pump, and pump housing replaced at ~115,000 miles. I'm past 220,000 miles now and all is well. Thanks for visiting!
Americans confuse the ability to tolerate neglect with reliability
Well, Toyotas DO tolerate a lot of neglect. ;-) Thanks for visiting!
2013 gti owner, bought used with 44k miles, 118k now. Have only had one issue, a coilover failed, essy fix. One of the most reliable vehicles I have owned, just starts and runs every day. Burns some oil which is to be expected for this engine.
Excellent report! Thanks for sharing!
that the reason why i bought gti 7 clubsport u can go fast when u want it 10 sec its plenty ok for me and its cost same as a casual golf 7 😂
Very nice! American VW enthusiasts know that Europe gets all of the good stuff! ;-) Thanks for visiting.
Also where the heck can I buy the Dongle?
I bought my dongle via online dealership sales. I may have gotten lucky and scored my unit before corporate caught-on and closed-off online sales for that "dealer-only' product. Thanks for visiting.
Volkswagen New Zealand is making it absolutely impossible as they can't seem to compete with the USA and RSA priced quotes. The price here in NZ is unfortunately more than double. I am now left with very little option other than to consider a custom system instead. In New Zealand the VW branch in Christchurch charge US$ 975 for the Helix. :( Sad Any recommendations, I am all ears. Great content as always, thank you.
Thanks for your comment! I' cannot speak to why the unit costs so much in New Zealand. I don't know if there's a higher import tax there or if perhaps the dealers have increased the prices to discourage customers from buying an accessory that their shops don't want to deal with. Depending on your sound goals, you could achieve *some* success by finding the speakers wires for your setup, tapping them for external feeds, and then sending those feeds into a subwoofer amplifier that accepts speaker level inputs. You may even be able to achieve a better sound. Good Luck! -Scott
@@StealthGTI I noticed you mentioned a clip ("Small Jumper") that you lost when you wired the Helix. A clip that is used along with installation in the Right Hand Drive vehicles. How does this installation work and what does the small jumper do? I have RHD - What will happen if I don't install the clip?
@@stephanpieterse6960 - The DSP circuits account for the different distances of each speaker from the driver's ears. If you drive a right-hand car and don't install the jumper, then it *may* sound a tad off... but it'll sound great to your front seat passenger. ;-)
You are like a dad, explaining good stuff. Thank you for the help.
I appreciate that! My daughter says I'm "like a dad," too. But I'm probably more strict with her than with my visitors! ;-) Thanks for visiting!
That’s commitment to ham radio! Love it. My wife would not let me do that.
Thanks! My wife is a keeper for sure! Not only does she not care what I do to my car, she even said that she doesn't care if I decide to erect a tower at the house. "What? Did you just order me to install a station at home?" HAHA! See my KE4WMF playlist for a related video. Thanks for visiting!
I love how you start your tuning at the lower end on your privileges. I always have to be really careful, trying not to go outside my band.
Thanks! When I first upgraded to General in 2007, setting my memory slot to the lower edge of my privileges helped me to remember the lower edge. The upper limit is easier to remember. Over time, it simply became a convenience to jump to the lower edge when I dialed through the memory channels. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTII've now done the same thing. Helps especially when mobile.
how did you mount the fire extinguisher in the back?
Hello! For some reason, the pressure in my 2019 vRS crtdi octavia increases in the cooling system! According to measurements, there is exhaust gas in the cooling water! Water does not boil, but it leaks from the expansion tank! Pressure test shows no holes! No bubbles in the expansion tank! No oil in the water! Egr cooler replaced !Control, thermostat too! But the error is there! Do you have any tips? Thanks
Interesting! Perhaps your expansion tank cap needs replacing? It's designed to bleed off excessive pressure. It may be bleeding too soon. Good Luck!
I am concerned with drilling holes into the frame of my vehicle for the tow hitch. I own a 24 Carolla hybrid sedan and would hate to deal with rust down the road when I eventually sell it. Was that a concern for you?
Most modern trailer hitches don't require drilling. In fact, I think most manufacturers go through great lengths to design their hitches to use existing holes in the body that were used by the robots that built the car. My hitch fastens at seven of the eight factory bumper points using slightly longer bolts. The other two points use carriage bolts that are fished into factory holes where robots held the body during assembly. Shop at etrailer.com for your hitch. Each hitch page shows the instructions for your particular car. If you see a step that requires drilling, then look at another hitch to see if you can find one that doesn't require it. Thanks for visiting!
Will the resinator reduce some power ?
No. It simply provides a place for some of the sound waves to bounce around and get absorbed. It's a straight-thru design. Thanks for visiting!
Just discovered your UA-cam -- Planning to dive into 2024 VHF Contest June 8-9 with two-element 6m Yagi, at home. Would be interested to see if I can join the Crabs Net--will try as soon as I get the Yagi going. Good luck with 2024 VHF Contest. de W3GX FM9vb Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.
I won't be contesting this month due to my support of two different bicycle tours. I expect to make a light effort in CQ's WWVHF contest next month. I'm planning to show at hamfests in Roanoke and Berryville in August. Stop by and say hello. Regarding the Crab Net, Sundays at 20:00 ET on 50.180 MHz, I think we get some check-ins from your area from time to time. *I* can't hear them, but NCS can. Point your beam toward Gloucester, VA for the most direct heading to NCS. Thanks for visiting!
Some Mods can make sense but never financially. Increasing longevity can mean decreasing stress. You can decrease stress by making the car lighter. How can you make it lighter ? You can either get rid of stuff like rear seats (loss of function) or you can replace parts by lighter parts. Those are always more expensive. The car designer already made sure you are getting the best product for the best price. Or you don´t care and buy those super expensive carbon fiber rims and racing seats and what not.
Thanks for sharing your perspective!
My VW Polo 2010 with 220.000km also still works. However, the timing chain has elongated and I got lucky that the engine didn´t blow. I chose a base model with 60HP without a turbo so less parts can brake. The catalytic converter is also done this year. Besides that everything is fine. So cars like anything else can last for quite some long time if you take care of it. However just this week I have bought a Toyota Corolla Hatchback Hybrid. I love this car. And I will be selling my trusty 14 year old Polo.
Enjoy the Corolla! I'd consider one myself, but I may get something just a little larger for my next car. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTI You are welcome. How about a Prius or something completely else ?
@@sierraecho884 - I've considered a Prius. The latest version has good looks and more power than before. I like that I could run the AC while parked without idling the engine, but the system would automatically start the engine to recharge the battery, if needed. I don't know about the car's cargo carrying capacity, though, such as rooftop rack and a trailer hitch. Believe it or not, those are important to me, even with a small car. Thanks for the suggestion. -Scott
I've had 12 VAG cars... didn't regret any of them, even our 2004 Touareg which had low ratings but we had it 14 years without problems except pretty much the first year.. Even after 220k miles, only did a drive shaft, fuel pump and alternator.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing!
Woo hoo , you're spoiled ! ;)
Yes! Definitely spoiled. This VW is a great car... until maybe it's not someday. HAHA! Thanks for visiting!
Curious. Did you have to choke the Tunematic cables/control cables? If so, how did you go about it? This looks like an awesome controller. I might get one for my ICOM 7100 as I'll be buying a tarheel soon.
I did not choke the Tunematic. Perhaps I should have. Regardless, I returned to using my MFJ-1924. The TM-1 is a good controller, but required constant retuning or fine tuning in my particular application. See my MFJ-1924 video for general descriptions of my issues. Now that MFJ products may soon my unacquireable, I'd consider a Tunematic LITE. It features similar "clunkiness" to the MFJ, but also has some automated features that may still be practical, even in my application. Thanks for visiting!
Does any one know how to fix this Volkswagen Golf GTI trouble code B10CE00 climate control
My blower did not generate any trouble codes. It's a bit odd that search engines are presenting this video and my website as a result to searching for "B10CE000." In my case, it was clearly a motor problem. Good luck with your search for answers.
I did fix it by the way. Pulled the control module connectors replugged them and recalibrate the module.
I bought my 2015 GTI during the pandemic I’m in nyc found it in Texas since everything was on lock down decided to take a ride out 25k miles $9900. it sat on their lot for 9 months it was tuned mildly and loud so people kept passing it up. I pulled the trigger nonetheless drove it back stoped by a muffler shop on the way and added a silencer til I got it home. It was supposed to be a daily but having previous VWs it was only a matter of time because I changed everything after selling my b7 RS4. I enjoy your channel and whatever I had doubts on your channel has gotten in depth with whatever problems I encountered. Thanks
Thanks for your report! I hope the car serves you well.
Thank you so much that was extremely great info!

Hi…Enjoyed the video very much, just a small problem, Im based in the UK and these are sold on Amazon UK .Unfortunately there’s no info on whether they are made for right hand drive cars so can the top part be reversed?, I am looking to purchase the AutoExec AUE27004 which has the IPad mount encluded…I intend to use Yaesu FT710 with this desk …any help would be great ,thanks…Steve de M7GWJ
I contacted AutoExec to ask your question. They said the Australian market is the only place that makes desks for right hand drive cars. They were going to get back to me regarding inventory there, but I didn't get a new response. Perhaps that's your next move? With that said, I'll confess that the prices today are too rich for my blood. I'd build something from wood if I was starting from nothing. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTI Hi, thanks for the reply, yeh I went ahead and purchased the desk anyway, it’s absolutely fine but in reverse if you get my meaning. lol…using the ft710 with no problem with the 12v battery etc in the compartment below, only problem is the ipad stand is at the back which is too much of a stretch but a bit of DIY will sort that out with no problem, all in all a nice bit of kit for £130 English pounds, thanks very much for your help, 73 de Steve
Thanks for the information! Unfortunately for me I moved to SV9 land years ago and unfortunately Renault does not do I. Glass antennas for their car radios. They choose to mount an antenna towards the back center of the roof. I have used STI-CO ANTENNAS in the past for law enforcement vehicles. They are very expensive at over $300 which includes a special diplexer that allows you to add VHF UHF and your car radio antennas all into one. They even have a GPS version. At a standstill since all materials must be imported and the issue with that is they charge 24% VAT tax on everything including the postage! Very illegal in my book. Have to wait for relatives to pack the items and bring them over which saves on taxes. So now we sit and wait……
Thanks for sharing that info. I don't know anything about some cool looking products that appear to be only for the European market. I hope you have a solution soon. Thanks for visiting!
I have a 2003 Jetta TDI wagon with a 5-soeed stick. I bought it new in January 2003 and it now has 410k miles on it. I had a new clutch put in it, and several sets of tires along the way, but the drivetrain has been flawless. I did change the egr valve 2 times over the years, and it did carbon up at about 365k miles, requiring a new intake manifold. I rebuilt the suspension at about that time, also. Every 100k miles I have the timing belt serviced, including water pump and tensioners. I had a couple of wheel alignments done over the years. The motor and transmission have never been touched. The car gets around 45 mpg in mixed driving, and I have gotten up to 53 miles per gallon driving on long trips. It is the most dependable car I have ever had, and I have been driving for 60 years. PS I have used Amsoil in it since new, changing it every 5k miles. I just hope it keeps going, because cars cost so much now.
The moor oil manufacturing does not matter at all. It´s always the same product as long as it has the VW specification on it. It´s the same oil distributet by different brands.
The ALH era of TDIs has long-been considered the best of the bunch! It'll run forever! Thanks for visiting!

I put 144k on my 2009 Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0 T. It was not fun though. Replaced throttle body, PVC valve, gas cap, main seal, and the fuel line got a hole in it. The oil pressure sensor finally needed replaced and that was the last straw. I had probably 8 CELs. I don’t think I’ll ever own another. The car was great but the engine was crap.
Yes, that was a painful ride for you, without a doubt! You didn't mention the replacement car. I hope you have a good one! Thanks for visiting!
The more deep I get into this rabbit hole the more fascinating it becomes!
HAHA! Thanks for watching!
Stats say you're wrong. Way off. Toyota has an 80% reliability rating. VW comes in at 62%. Source: Carwow 2020 article by James Allen. Wasn't hard to find
I'm sure someone with a bias can write that VWs have a better "reliability rating" than 62%. And some models are better than others. Still, I DID say that Toyota is a benchmark for reliability. Thanks for visiting.
@@StealthGTI go and read the article. It's not biased, it's actually researched
As you were saying that you could evacuate quickly with all your radio gear. I have seen your modular antenna setups and I know you said you don’t have everything on there at once most of the time. What do you have on there antenna wise for daily driving? Would you need to attach more antennas before you evacuate? Is it a fast process to fit what you need? I really like your setup, very neat and well executed 👌 Cheers from Western Australia.
Thanks! Check out the "My Antenna Farm" video on my KE4WMF playlist. It may answer some of your questions. Regarding an evacuation, I'd leave the rotator setups behind and leave with just my verticals. The equipment INSIDE the car was mostly what I was talking about taking with me. Thanks for visiting!
I consider my 2019 Jetta reliable even though I had to replace the gas tank, 2 days, free vw atlas rental, under warranty. Now 5 years old so new battery, $450 and front brakes, $380. I am another Sarah fan and she nailed the review of the Jetta. 46 mpg on my first highway trip to Atlantic City and back to Philadelphia. 6 year warranty thanks to dieselgare. 2vws on 10 least reliable consumer reports, jeeps 10 and 9 Jetta #8! I agree with you.
Thanks, John! My wife's 2018 just left its warranty last month. The check engine light was on within two weeks! HAHA! The scan showed something petty that may have been a fluke. Thanks for visiting!
You must stick out like a sore thumb, cruising down the road with all those antennas sticking up
They aren't reliable, its a fact, why would anyone say otherwise if they were great, my friend has vw jetta, new purchaed, and is constantly going to dealer for repairs, its under warranty, but he's sick of it, sure you may be lucky to have a good unit. But usually they aren't.
I've been lucky with ALL of the VWs that I purchased new, starting in 1998. Said differently, I've been lucky with every VW that did not have a chance to be neglected or improperly maintained by a previous owner. Thanks for visiting!
They have this reputation for a reason.

I don't talk about the unlawful items in my car! ;-) Thanks for visiting!
I spent $500 for the 40k major service interval (iridium plugs), 5k oil changes. 2018 Jetta 1.4 SE 5sp now with 69k and a double warranty (6yrs 72k). Warranty fixes: dry coolant found on radiator seam (replaced radiator), oil leak (pcv related), drivers seat heater. That's all. I hate ethanol so I run ethanol free 91. Expensive? 39.1 mpg avg since day 1. Zero oil burn. I go to an Audi.VW specialty shop that uses Liqui Moly oil. Recently bought Rain-X silicone wiper driver side (Bosch was made in china, not buying it). Summer tires are Conti Extreme DSW, excellent in rain and rated at 168mph so I can do cloverleafs at 40+ if I want to. Winter tires are Michelin X-ice. Temp engine mod is Liquimoly Speed Tec for a 0.1 tune :-). Been on 1,000 and 1,500 mile road trips. Wanted to outrun a thunderstorm so I set cruise to 83 from Colorado towards Minnesota. Really like it so far, carplay needs Apple certified cable, Biggest gripe: the other drivers.
You and I share the same "biggest gripe!" HAHA! If only there was a way to keep everyone else off "MY" roads. ;-) Thanks for visiting!

Nice and explanatory for newcomers. Good job 73
Thanks! I appreciate that!
